S-adenosyl-methionine (abbreviated SAM-e, pronounced "Sammy") occurs naturally in the body. Widely popular in Europe for over a decade, it first became available in the United States in 1999 and is reported to have a significant antidepressant effect. SAM-e appears to work by increasing serotonin and dopamine activity in the brain. While healthy people manufacture enough of their own SAM-e, research has found that clinically depressed people are often deficient (Brown 1999). At this time information on the usefulness of SAM-e as an anxiety tratment is limited, but some people speculate that if SAM-e functions like an SSRI, it may have an antianxiety effect.
Side effects of SAM-e appear to be few, perhaps because it naturally occurs in the body. Some people report nausea or queasiness that goes away after a few days of taking it. SAM-e is unlike Saint-John's-wort and prescription antidepressants in that many peole claim to feel its benefits within the first few days of use.
