Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is manufactured by the adrenal cortex and is used in the synthesis of other hormones in the body, including the sex hormones estrogen and testosterone. The ability to produce it declines with age. Many people rport increased energy and sense of well-being, better ability to cope with stress, and improved mood and sleep after taking DHEA for a few weeks. The standard dose is 10 to 50 milligrams per day. Avoid taking it in higher doses, as some physicians believe that high doses can suppress the body's natural ability to make DHEA. Also, DHEA can be problematic for some women because they can convert it into testosterone. For this reason, women taking DHEA should ake low doses (10 milligrams) or take a synthetic form that stays in the body as DHEA.
