The amino acid tryptophan is a natural precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Serotonin is involved in regulationg many body functions, including mood, sleep, appetite, and pain threshold. It produces a feeling of calmness and well-being, and deficiencies have been linked to anxiety. Tryptophan is a potent anti depressant. A number o studies have found tryptophan to be as effective as prescription antidepressants and sedatives in relieving depression, insomnia and generalized anxiety, as well as anger and irritability. Tryptophan is available in two forms: 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) and L-tryptophan. You can find 5-HTP in most health food stores. The recommeneded dose is 50 to 100 milligrams two to three times per day (or in a single combined dose at bedtime for insomnia), with or without food. If you take either 5-HTP or L-tryptophan, effectiveness can be improved by taking it along with Vitamin B3 (niacinamide 100 to 500 milligrams) and Vitamin B6 (100 Milligrams). If you are taking an SSRI, tricyclic, or MAO-inhibitor antidepressent, do not take either form of tryptophan except under the suupervi8sion of a physician.
